The Vanity of It All

Ciao bella,

How many of you gals get your face on in the bathroom? I could never understand it. However I'm sure it's the majority of ladies who hit the bathroom to use the mirror standing with ill lighting and steamy from showering! Makeup tubes and caps flying all over the floor! Well it is never too late to find a nice place in the bedroom for a vanity with mirror! Why as far back as I can remember I owned a lighted makeup mirror and would sit down in front of it and primp. We even bought a mini vanity for Dad's house when we would stay over on the weekend.

When I set up housekeeping in my first apartment I recall spying a walnut vintage vanity at Harold's Broadway Second Hand Store in Lawrence. Its chocolate elegance held a magnificent mirror which was built in and adjusted in a swing motion to your better side. There were two drawers on each side and one in the middle. Plenty of space for makeup of all kinds, hair accessories and brushes and combs, even jewelry and just about everything a "Glamazon" like me would need to play "makeup"!

I remember purchasing this Cadillac of cabinetry before I bought the bed! When Mom would visit she would always remark that she thought I was getting ready for my close-up in the cinema!

I have a beautifully framed photo of Nana with her silver cup when she won a cosmetology competition on the vanity and just behind it I keep my Hollywood lights makeup mirror with different settings including daytime, work, and nighttime. Dad bought me this one. As soon as he knew my last mirror bit the dust. He knew how important it was to replace it. The shopping hunt was on -- Sears, Filene's, Jordan Marsh and even Woolworth's! He wouldn't stop 'til he found it! That was Dad! I dread mentioning where we finally found it! No, not eBay!

When I sit on my vanity chair which is laced with Nana's fur fox tails I am in heaven! Surrounded by my fav perfumes and colors that enhance my eyes and face, moisturizers and creams applied at leisure, it's my time to relax and enjoy the transformation. Oh and it is a transformation! Lipsticks that are from Jungle Red to Orange Crush! Greens and purple and blue glitter eyeliners are my favs from Tony & Tina's line. No longer being manufactured for yet another divorce!

My Vanity, my friend, has weathered every move and now as I figure out how long this relationship has lasted I can understand why the makeup I wore at 19 years old has had to change its face during our thirty-eight years together!

For the Vanity of it all!

Who would think that another one of Mother Nature's miracles is used esthetically, however not just to be counted in carots? It's Diamond Dust my dear ladies! Tiny particles left behind from the cutting of diamonds. The hardness of these tiny particles (similar as dust) make it a popular material used for a variety of products. Just about half of all natural Diamonds are found in mines throughout central and southern Africa. Originally found and mined in India diamond dust proved valuable in cosmetics. Even Madonna during one of her many tours combined white eyeshadow and diamond dust and applied it on her eyelids!

Diamonds as we all know look like transparent crystal and made of carbon, as its atoms are arranged in a diamond lattice. Diamond dust may be found in different colors and can be coarse or fine. Valuable for their hardness and heat conductivity industrial diamonds can be found in the use of surfacing products. Gem-grade diamonds are also valuable for their color and clarity. (The diamond coated pan in my kitchen has been a treasure in my culinary adventures!)

As a natural mineral diamonds are the hardest. Productively useful as an abrasive in cutting, drilling, grinding and polishing. You'll find nail files coated with diamond dust making the file stay sharp and lasting. Many nail products contain diamond dust to prevent chipping and also strengthen nails including a pretty shimmer effect. Check your labels for diamond dust which can also be found in creams, perfumes, shower gels and makeup. In my experience diamonds are a girls best friend!

A New Year, A New Attitude for 2012

As the old year closes on a beautiful Christmas holiday, we can reflect on what we gals can do to make ourselves keep the beauty going. Remember to work hard is also to play hard! Life is short, so treat yourselves well! Don't think twice about any beauty treatment in the New Year. There is Spa Week here in Boston and in many suburbs. It's promoted a few times a year. ‘Twas The Week Before Christmas when all through the salon
The scissors were clicking; the mad rush was on.
The hairdressers were busy primping the coifs;
Perm odor, tinting, hair spray—what cough?
The nail-techs stayed sitting; painting their art,
And the patrons were in and out like a dart.
The receptionist was praying for the end of the day,
While just out the window she noticed a sleigh.
And in walked a lady all covered in flour;
She said she’d been baking for hours and hours.
“I’ve seen to the children, but what of myself?
“My husband’s been busy and couldn’t spare an elf.
“My nails are all broken; my hair feels like glue;
“I hope there is someone who can make me feel new.”
With that gleam in her eye it was hard to say “no”—
Mary volunteered for the job—ho, ho, ho!
Shampoo, shampoo, how do you do?
Rollers and gel—need the dryer too.
With a trick of her brush she was coiffed in a flash;
Manicured, painted, and dried in a dash.
Her nails were all shiny—painted “jungle-red.”
The smile on her face left nothing unsaid.
As she waved us good-bye, Merry Christmas to all,
Everyone stopped to see the great haul.
While out the window we all began to peer
At a giant sleigh and eight strong reindeer!
Our lady hopped right in and with a nod to go
Off went her chariot above all the snow.
Jingle, jingle, jingle you can hear the bells ring.
It was a sight to behold there were songs to sing.

It’s a Small World

Let's skip the beauty and makeup tricks this week. I'd like you to read about our pass-times we love which inevitably brings out a natural beauty in all of us. Mine is my Dollhouse!

In the early 1980s, when I was living in a lovely studio with an outdoor pool in a decent area of South Lawrence, I found my treasure! Next to our giant green dumpster sitting on the ground I spied it! All quite empty inside of bare plywood except for some thick green carpeting which I eventually ripped out and of course had to sand all the floors from glue residue. The outside was painted a sage green with white shutters and several window boxes. The kitchen had a bow window also painted white. Right there I decided to rescue this treasure, after all I didn't have to pay for it and I could always find another "little girl" interested in it. I cleared off a bureau and there it stood.

Ideas came rushing in. I remembered the 3 vintage wooden pieces I had purchased not too long ago. A brown hand-carved floor radio from the '40s and a white frig and stove from the '50s. And then it began -- the "miniature fever" they called it.

I drove to every miniature show I could find. Eric Fuch's in those days became my best friend. I wall-papered every room, put down every floor, measured and framed every inside and outside door frame. Hand-made the curtains for baby’s and master bedrooms. Painted the house a cotton candy pink, and shingled the roof and bricked the chimney. I also put brick and mortar in both fireplaces with a mirror and tweezer!

From friends I would hear "So Mary are you coming out dancing tonight with us?" And the same reply for a while was "I am in the midst of applying tile to the kitchen floor, blah, blah, blah!" But I was happy and so fulfilled that this project came into my life and made it all worthwhile. There were plenty of days to go dancing, after all that’s where I met my David, at the Roxy Dance Club.

The "mini fever" had barely subsided. I started furnishing every room with true delight. It was also electrified as glowing lamps illuminated every room. My lovely Mom even made by hand the red gingham dish towels that hang in the kitchen today! She even bought several pieces the house needed. She and my Dad would drive me to some shows and we just had a fun time! And as all good Italian parents they would drop in to visit the dollhouse when I was working and leave me supper and treats! I would find notes from Mom raving about how far I came fixing the interior as well as the exterior of it. I cherish those notes today. They really got into the progress of the house and its beauty!

As years passed I would decorate for every season and holiday. Even the attic accumulated the necessary cobwebs, dust and a house mouse! But it was minimal to what I have now accumulated from eBay! When I moved to Boston I set the house up in my Mom’s Beauty Shop in her home. Her clients and friends enjoyed it for 10 years as I would decorate always with some new little thing.

I lost interest when Mom passed and it stayed decorated for Christmas for 9 years. Then it was a decision I didn't make — David did! He brought it home to our place! It fit in front of our window facing where John F. Kennedy's apartment window faced! Home sweet home!

This summer the grass was cut, the flower boxes filled, the garden with its new gazing ball was in full bloom with lilies, tulips and irises! Hanging plants and a porch light adorn the front lawn. The frog pond I made was happening. The flamingo -- birdbath (I also made) attracted one cute, little yellow bird all summer! Croquet was enjoyed by all. And of course the outdoor "feasts" of sushi with Chinese take-out, cakes, 4th of July hot dogs, beer, oysters on the half shell, spaghetti and meatballs with Chianti! You can find pancakes, coffee and syrup for breakfast in the kitchen — just don't touch my "Mary" mug.

My Nano Catalano's portrait (Mom gave me this small round pin of her Dad) hangs proudly over the master bedroom's fireplace. Mom just loved that! A bust of Apollo and portraits of the Grand Canal and Degas ballerinas grace the living room walls. David prints a matchbook size newspaper weekly with our past week's color photo captions and stories. The Bowdoin Street Times is delivered in the new mailbox promptly!

Now for the autumn clean-up! Must rake leaves, stow out-door furniture, put fireplace wood near doorway and decorate for everyone's grand season of Christmas!

My parents seem to have lived their life in a “gentle” era where niceties were displayed commonly everyday. I know; I was there! Has anyone noticed how rude and inconsiderate people have become? Lately I have noticed that more and more of the younger generation are just so totally in their own world. I know it’s a generation that were taught not to say “excuse me,” “thank you,” “you’re welcome” – simply because I don’t hear it any more. If you say those things it shows weakness and vulnerability! So why leave yourself open by being considerate and just taking the time to be nice? It would sure make for a better day when life gets tough. When you follow your manners and smile doing it, a great reward will follow-the beauty of kindness.

Why even in Italy there is a word prego that not only means “you’re welcome” but “go ahead before me”! And now in a world with technology ringing from our purses, what to do, what to do?

Here are a few tips for your mobile distraction:

Always silence your phone when in a restaurant, theatre or cinema. Use the vibrate mode in a restaurant if you are expecting something important. Excuse yourself from the table and make it quick especially if people need to order.

Lower your voice when talking in a public place.

Never have a “personal” conversation in a public spot.

Use the 10 ft rule when speaking on your cell-mark your distance!

When you must take a call in company, excuse yourself with permission to accept the call.

Never blame the caller for a “dropped call.”

I have seen these rules broken everyday! So listen up ladies!

What happened to the thank you note of old? You know with a stamp and return address. I hope the schools are bringing back penmanship lessons because I’ve heard some kids don’t know how to sign their names. One strike for excessive computer use! Ahhh the cursive way! One of my school subjects that would be marked scrupulously! Here are a few etiquette tips:

You may freshen your lipstick at the table quickly after dining in a restaurant – never your hair! Summon the waiter by raising your hand, first finger pointing up or you may call “waiter” or “miss” never “sir.”

Remember to tip your bartender 15-20%! Let a gentlemen open a door for you.

So remember we live in a city with close proximity to the next person. Show a little kindness and feel the beauty of it all!

One of the only saving graces to the end of summer and the start of autumn are the magnificent colors of the season. The grand pumpkin! Bright eye candy! It’s an uplifting sight to see them lined up at farm stands and piled up in front of the grocers. Such a sturdy fruit, so yummy and then again another of Mother Nature's beauty treatments and
medicinal cures!

This orange squash is native to North America. Approximately 90 percent of pumpkins from United States are grown in Illinois. Pumpkin color can vary but most popular are orange and yellow.

Inside the core which contain the seeds is high in nutrients with the seeds having a high Zinc content, known to be terrific for the skin. The Zinc helps to heal acne blemishes and sooth irritated skin. The alpha-hydroxy acids help to exfoliate and revitalize. The pulp is also used to reduce the appearance of scarring. The bright colored fruit are chalk full of multivitamins which nourish the skin.

The vitamin C maintains skin health by preventing the collagen from breaking down. Vitamin A softens and cleanses and softens the skin.

In days gone by it was staple food of the Native Americans. They used it to make medicine and wove dried strips of it into mats. Was also used as a cure for freckles and as a remedy for snake bites! The Beauty of Freedom

Labor Day and the ending of summer is always a bit sad. This sounded like a great idea to overcome the “Labor Day Blues.”

My Happy Feet Spa friend Patricia and I were walking our laps in the outdoor pool. She said the best thing to do before summer is over is to make plans for the upcoming seasons autumn and winter. Whether it be some trips near or far, a concert, theatre subscriptions, lunch with the girls or even a new haircut and makeover. Made me feel good I could do those things, not only because I can but I have the freedom to do so!

Coming up on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th there are so many American freedoms to be grateful for even though they, unsuccessfully, tried to take them away. We can use cosmetics as well as clothing freely. Stroll down the street and choose any salon or spa that can paint our nails from green to black! We can apply lipstick and glittery eyeliner. Showy or conservative-it’s your choice—our choice of changing styles, having the blessed freedom to do so! We can wear short-shorts, maxi dresses, no sleeves, low cut, high cut cleavage AND booty enhancements!

So while we remember in our prayers the lost souls of September 11th—at least they all experienced the beauty of freedom and led lucky lives to be here in this grand United States of America for the time they walked her earth! When the only times a women covered her face was with her fan so she could flutter her eyelashes at her latest admirer!

On September 11th take that moment of believing in America and her beauty of freedom today and always.

It seems some of us are willing to try anything to shed a few pounds. Well the Acai Berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) claimed such a case.

I have to be truthful here—I sent away by computer for a bottle and found it did suppress appetite. But the company wanted me to sign up for a “lifetime” supply with an automatic scheduled delivery and charge to your credit card whether you needed it or not! Beware of the automatic delivery!

So when I went to cancel—that was it! You either signed up forever or for get about it! They were evasive on sending just a single order! So I decided to write about this new and yet not so new harvest of miracle wonders.

The “Fruit That Cries” is a deep purple and can be found growing on certain palm trees in the Amazon rainforests of Brazil. You cannot find fresh Acai Berries outside the Amazon but in other nutritious forms as in dietary supplement capsules, juice, tea, powder and frozen purees. Just a visit to Whole Foods or your fav Earthfood store and you can be turned into an Acai Berry fan easily! It has been known to improve energy levels, sleep functions, skin appearance, circulation, eliminating toxins and of course weight loss. Because the Acai Berry is so rich in protein and glucosamine it can also reduce pain for arthritis sufferers. Also known for it's delicious blueberry/chocolate flavor it has 10 times the amount of antioxidants of red grapes!

The oil derived from the Acai Berry contains many beneficial vitamins including Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids. The oil is also used in age renewal creams, cleansers and face masks, body washes and hair care lines.

A Chinese folk song says that “Feet bath in spring would make one’s body feel as if the sun was rising slowly and the ice dissolves gradually, feet bath in summer will eliminate the illness of fever and complex symptoms, feet bath in fall will get the lungs moistened and the intestines moving, feet bath in winter will give warmth to the acupuncture point of Dantian.” It was the start of a truly unique experience!

As I entered into “heaven” for the next hour and a half my friend Patricia L. was waiting for me sitting in a comfortable cushy chair with pillows and a libation of your choice, I sat in one right next to her. Chinese instrumental music filled the room of soft lighting, warming terra cotta colors and scents of pleasant herbal flowers permeated our cubby! Two welcoming Chinese massagists came out of a private corner of the room and set down (one for each of us) basins of herbal scented warm water to soak our feet. As our feet soaked we had our “dry” massage starting from the top of our head to the base of our backs!

The kinks I had were GONE! I was so relaxed! I felt so “in trust” with my massagist! He then dried off my “Happy Feet” and performed a reflexology type of massage on them! The fruit and sips of tea were delightful! After it was all over Patricia and I swooned over what we had just experienced!

According to Chinese medicine the human body’s health is closely related to the feet. Medical experts from Europe and America also believe the sole of the foot is “the second heart” since the many nerve endings are linked to the brain and all the organs. Soaking the feet for at least 30 minutes improves and facilitates the circulation of blood.

The footbath and the reflexology work together to promote good health and beauty care, nourishing and protecting the brain, supplementing vigor and postponing old age. The combination also will relive fatigue and improve sleep.

Consort Yang Yu Huan (1 June 719-15 July 756) was a high-ranking imperial consort during her time, known as one of The Four Beauties of Ancient China. “Beauty Culture” can be viewed in many ways. Especially according to All That Zazz, Beauty is everywhere!

I’ve brought you trips, museums, theatre and of course the care of oneself to beautify and maintain. All in the name of Beauty, I bring you my latest adventure to Provincetown, Cape Cod. There, just coming into town, passing the curvaceous dunes, cruising down narrow Commercial Street filled with walking people, music blasting my 80s Best of Rick Astley CD. Our baby blue Zip Car “Muffet” Mini Cooper with top down and sunshine warming our faces.

Here are the sights and smells of ocean, flower bushes of beach roses and hyacinth. The Portuguese Bakery also fills the air with its fresh sweet goods! The senses of smell are extravagantly rich as we continue our travel in this artful culture of art galleries, clothing stores, restaurants of seafood and pride! My trips to P’town are out numbered by a span of over 30 years. Every visit never disappoints with all its kitschy glory.

This year the gardens spoke to me in immense color and abundance. “See you old man winter, we’re back, we’re here and we’re staying!”

A new adventure this year was unexpected, most exhilarating and quite breath taking! Our friend Rich J. took us out dune-buggying in his jeep. There we were driving through the warm sands of Race Point and its lighthouse. As we kept plowing through the soft sand Rich pulled right up to the seashore, waves and foam waiting to cool our feet! Truly amazing! I’ve barely recovered!

Beauty lies in the soul of a new adventure. It tantalizes your inner being with a calming verve. Choose one wisely.

Well we’re halfway through summer and all us sun worship queens are grateful to the Food and Drug Administration. Last month they released long-awaited sunscreen regulations with new labeling indicating reliable info on product protection—ironic how the sun in so many ways can be so healthy and yet so deadly.

The FDA wants to inform and educate the consumer that they are protected against both ultraviolet-B (UVB) and ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays. The labeling now on shelves gives the sun-protection factor on its labels indicating only the level of protection of UVB rays, which mostly causes sunburn. Both UVB and UVA rays are known to cause wrinkles and skin cancer.

The new rules will be out in a year. A sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum” will be required to protect against both sets of rays. And the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) will be the “number” to the degree of protection against the UVB and UVA rays. For those sunscreens that don’t offer enough protection, a warning label will be required to carry a mandatory statement that the product hasn’t been shown to protect against skin cancer! These rules are a long time coming!

Many sunscreen products on the market bear a label “broad spectrum” that only protects UVA rays. Broad Spectrum will have to mean protection of both kinds of rays.

The new FDA ruling is also requiring companies to eliminate terms like “water-proof” and “sweat-proof.” In the future these products will need to pass a test for water resistance in order to keep a water claim on label. The FDA in a separate proposal is considering to make SPF 50 the max value since there is not enough data for higher SPF products. They will also be looking into “sunscreen sprays”—whether or not it offers as much SPF protection since consumers spray themselves so lightly.

So sun loungers pay attention to your labels and stay protected from old man sun!

So what’s in your garden? Besides the usual herbs for culinary necessity there is peppermint.

Peppermint is a hybrid mint which is a cross between spearmint and water mint. The plant can now be found all over the world but its roots were in Europe and Asia.

While producing purple flowers the peppermint plant contains menthol, considered to be a volatile oil. The menthol’s enticingly cool and spicy fragrance can be used in aromatherapy known to relieve exhaustion, stress and anxiety. When the oil is applied to skin it can brighten and cool it.

The oil can also be diluted with jojoba oil and when applied topically will prevent acne and clogged pores. If you experience a flaky scalp, add a few drops of oil to your shampoo.

Peppermint is also mentioned in the Bible to relieve pain. Doctors will tell you to soak your achy part in warm water and peppermint oil. You can find peppermint in lip balm with its cooling effects to soothe sunburned, windblown and chapped lips.

It’s heaven when peppermint bath salts are used to relax cramped muscles and ease respiratory illnesses. Even just a whiff of a fresh brewed cup of peppermint tea will have its aromatic value. Drinking it aids in digestion.

Peppermint is also a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash for its antiseptic properties.

My Nana and Nano grew an amazing garden every summer including mint. Nano always smelled of the mint which emanated from his shirt pocket! He would always say “It’s good for you! I can’t ever remember him without that mint his shirt pocket.

You can find various products containing peppermint such as creams, footbaths, hair products and lotions. So “feel the heal” and do it minty!

CPSC Approves New Federal Safety Rule for Hair Dryers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC:) unanimously approved the establishment of a new federal safety rule on hand-supported hair dryers. Hand-supported hair dryers that lack an immersion protection device have been identified by CPSC as posing a substantial product hazard to consumers.

Hand-supported hair dryers typically are used in bathrooms, near water sources, including the sink, bathtub, and lavatory. When there is no immersion protection device present, the uninsulated, electrically energized wires in the hair dryer present a risk of shock and electrocution to consumers.

Current industry standards require that manufacturers incorporate a device into the hair dryer that prevents shock and/or electrocution hazards when it contacts water. Industry voluntary standards, which require an immersion protection device, have contributed to a significant decline in electrocutions or electrical shock incidents related to immersion or contact with water. The majority of manufacturers and distributors of hand-supported hair dryers comply with these voluntary industry standards.

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act ("CPSIA") of 2008 provided CPSC with the authority to establish federal safety rules for consumer products that have demonstrated substantial compliance with a voluntary standard or set of guidelines.

Recently I was up late channel surfing. This infomercial really caught my attention. The “WEN HEALTHY HAIRCARE SYSTEM,” a new and innovative shampoo/conditioner developed by celebrity stylist Chaz Dean claiming luxurious, shiny and manageable hair after using it. There were all the “live” testimonials playing with their gorgeous locks! Before and after photos were also shown.

It was revolutionary hair care without harsh chemicals, using a perfect blend of herbs and natural ingredients. A “single” step" process that cleanses and conditions simultaneously and will not strip hair of color or moisture.

It all sounded fabu! But I’ve learned my lesson! “Google” reviews first—nothing like another sap to order the latest and the greatest! Must be used following manufacturers explicit directions. Cucumber seems most popular. Ordering from Amazon is safest (otherwise you could be signed up for automatic delivery!) Cleansing hair has come a long way.

As early as 4000 BC a cosmetic routine was established during the Eurasian Bronze Age where a system of beauty pampering ranged from bathhouses to hairstyling. Shampooing hair consisted of using soap, perfume and essential oils, none of which provided the quality of cleansing and luster of modern shampoo. It took modern science to understand the composition of hair soil and then develop a cleansing formula to combat it. The science of shampoo was a huge milestone in the achievement of personal hygiene. Good shampoo, let alone the word itself, was centuries away!

The Greeks and the Romans took part in the first development of personal hygiene. The Roman baths emphasized on the purity of water and according to their famous innovations of aqueducts were ultimately designed to improve the quality of life, certainly related to one’s personal health.

The ancient Greek word KOSMOS meant “to order, to arrange, or to adorn” while its similar meaning to English “cosmetics” was KOSMETIKOS, meaning “having the power to beautify” So as “curiosity killed the cat” one might say, I’m placing my order for shinier, healthier-looking and more manageable hair as Chaz Dean promised!

Well it’s that TIME of the year again gals!! Finally the fun weather is here! Every summer I put this list together to help you with your summer essentials when you are away from home at the water. First, invest in a sun hat! Some already have an SPF of 30/50 in the material! So let’s get it together from the most important stuff down!

First of all, Sun Protection-30 SPF or higher for faces only. Then a 30 SPF or higher for body preferably “water resistant.” You still must reapply! Follow directions thoroughly! Don’t forget your lip protection! Mine is a “pink” zinc ointment—Very colorful.

Sunglasses-can’t choose this year from my vintage collection! I did find stylish “sun” bifocals for reading!

A bottle of water to hydrate through the day. Put bottle of water in freezer the night before so it will stay cold for your sipping pleasure!

A nice big fluffy towel—nothing like it to lie on/dry off!

A cover-up when you feel enough SUN or that chill you get when you leave the water. I just ordered 2 fashionable turbans for hair protection when I’m hanging in the pool. And since you never know who you will meet in the water, a comb/brush to refresh the coif. Goody has put out a “Spin Pin” to whip up a quick chignon!

An energy bar for a quick pick-me-up snack or some nuts and fruit.

A fav magazine or book when you’re tired of “people watching.”

I always like to carry a spritz bottle with rose water for a quick cool-off! Evian also works well!

Hand sanitizer always comes in handy. The towelettes are so convenient.

“You Look Marvelous Beauty Talk”—Spring 2011 Series

After an All That Zazz Beauty Talk at the North End Library, three Post-Gazette writers meet: Mary DiZazzo-Trumbull, David Trumbull and of course that talented pooch, Freeway, and his human companion, Marie Simboli!

The talks were a success! All left the library feeling better on beauty education and latest products. I feel I am here to educate the public on the best new and old products. Also make-up techniques and tips were appreciated. Everyone had many questions and I answered them to the best of my knowledge. I also reminded people to feel free or email me with any other beauty dilemma they might be experiencing, for example, salon and spa advise, product purchase and use.

Here is a recap of some of the subjects we discussed.

My first talk of the three-part series examined “Skincare” and “Makeup.” I told everyone how important it was to use good, natural (ingredients closest to what your skin produces naturally), organic products. I’ve tried and sold many lines of skincare and at this point in time I love my Kosmea skincare line. Find it on my web site and find out why it will be good for you! Mineral Makeup is truly the best for your skin. It’s a powder which consists of many colors, blush and eye shadow. Find it at the drugstore. I recommend Bare Essentials or Avon.

You razzle-dazzled them through the years and they got you whatever you wanted. At least that's what my eyes did for me! Now with Mother Nature always around the corner, knocking on the door we must not hesitate to pay attention to our "peepers." So the eye makeup we used 5 years ago should not be the same as the eye makeup we must apply today. Luckily, eye makeup is practical magic!

As we get older our eyes change. We must also use a skin care regimen for mature skin not the same one you used when you were 20. In fact your skin care regimen should always be updated every 7-10 years.

Always use a "gentle" eye makeup remover. No stretching!

For fine lines: Never apply concealer on top of your wrinkles it just makes them more noticeable. Concealer is a highlighter and is used for those nasty dark circles. High lighter pens are also popular to brighten up those shadowy areas. Apply a flesh- tone pencil along the bottom inner rim.

For sparse brows: Give your brows a break and let them grow in for 3-4 weeks. Use a powder or feather pencil to fill in. A taupe or blonde shade looks best on just about everyone. Thin brows are not as attractive as full-arched brows.

For lashes: Apply a felt- tip liner to the roots of your lashes to make them look thicker and denser. Then line the upper, inner lid by holding lid taut. Finish with a volumizing mascara.

As I entered the elegant Back Bay College Club I felt an inviting feeling. Come, sit down, relax and indulge! That is exactly what my husband David and I did.

Miss Boston 2011 has been crowned!

This was my first Beauty Pageant. I was elated! Many asked if I was ever a contestant! Wow....back in my day I was more the Disco Queen than a girl vying for Pageant Princess!

The Miss America Organization brought to us here at the famous Omni Parker House a splendid tradition of beauty, talent, humor and brains. The event hosts were right on -- Dana Rosengard and Candy O'Terry brought out the best of the evening with great humor.

I'm sure it was hard choices on the judges because all the girls were so absolutely talented and unique. The Beauties were from all over including Cambridge, Revere, So. Boston, Somerville etc.

Naturally I pegged the winner from the top five. Sara Carlisle from Acton-now resides in Davis Square, Somerville. Her talent was an Egyptian Belly Dance that was exquisitely performed! She had this genuine look about her like nothing was an effort. She was confident and happy in her own skin. As my husband David quoted: "She looked like she was doing this pageant for the fun of it, she was already wearing her own crown of success." I was fortunate enough to have a private interview with Sara just minutes before the pageant. She is a professional horseback rider who has accomplished winning numerous regional and national awards and is a bronze medallist for dressage and eventing. She is quite a gal with a positive attitude and a bright future.

I was thrilled to meet Loren Rabinowitz from Brookline--Miss Massachusetts 2010 and several other Mass. county winners, even Miss Teen NH. Loren crowned Sara The new Miss Boston 2011 since Miss Boston 2010 Ashley Rizzo, mezzo-soprano, had rehearsal for an opera in New York. I also met personality plus Miss Bristol County, Kelli McBee. She'll be hosting a fundraiser to benefit The Children's Hospital, Boston. It's a Daddy-Daughter Dance 2011 -"An Enchanted Evening" on Saturday, March 26th from 7-10PM at the Sheridan Hotel. The pageant was brilliantly choreographed-reminding me of boxing matches when the pretty girl struts the stage announcing the next round with signs. They had handsome fellows between dress changes showing off all their various talent! Including "Mr. Emerson" with a "Jacque-esque" semi-drag performance.

The girls talents ranged from vocal, dance to classical piano. They were all luminous and unique.

You certainly make many life-long friendships and as Stephanie Janes, Executive Director and President of this non-profit organization quoted "It's a great experience for mentoring all the girls"

Why support such pageants? They encourage young women to develop their talents, their education and experiences that will flourish who they can truly be for a lifetime.

Sara Carlisle, our new Miss Boston 2011 will serve as a role model as an ambassador for Boston. We wish her well!

On Sunday night, February 20th, starting at 5:00, at The Omni Parker House will be beauty history in the making! Contestants will compete for the coveted "Mis Boston" title and $17,000 in scholarships and prizes. The young women will be competing in five phases of competition- talent, interview, physical fitness, evening gown, and on stage interview.

Miss Boston will not only be an ambassador for the city of Boston but will also serve as a role model for young women to encourage them to develop their leadership skills and to take an active role in their communities.

Welcome February sprucing up Dollhouse!

Thank goodness it's a short month so we are closer to spring! Received some really cute "outdoor" stuff for the dollhouse! A hand-made American Flag and holder for the door frame. The gal who makes these has interchangable flags so the Valentine's one is on it's way. The croquet set has debuted on the unfinished lawn. Waiting for green leaves and flowers to adorn yard. My husband David printed out another "Bowdoin St. Times" for the dollhouse. Also found a mini mailbox to put rolled up newspaper. The tiny newspaper is great referring to events of our week. More on the history of my dollhouse coming up!

A Good Winter for Netflix!

Busy baking a homemade date-nut bread today. Made a dozen hand-made Valentine's! Then decided to sit down and watch a movie.Based on a true story "Love Ranch" with Helen Mirren and Joe Pesce. What a pair! They owned a legal brothel in Reno Nevada and the year was 1976. Definitely worth a few hours of your time if you have an interest in legal brothels and how they were run. Next waiting for me is "Salt" with Angelina Jolie. Will let you know.
So hope everyone is keeping soft and smooth with this "drying" time of year. Between the cold outside and the heat inside, it's a sure skin killer! After bathing lather on the body cream. And moisturize your face before you put on your hat, moisturize your lips before you put on your scarf, moisturize your hands before you put on your gloves! Also moisturize those feet before you put on your socks!

Is there beauty in winter? So much snow is too much!

I really thought that 2nd last storm was beautiful. A real winter wonderland. The snow stuck to all the trees like a painting. Riding down the road I admired the whiteness of it all. But NOW I feel like spring can't come fast enough. I'm decorating my old dollhouse for spring. I ordered plants, ivy, shrubs and flowers galore. Even a flag and bracket for door frame as soon as paint dries will definitely be a sign of spring. The "miniature" place also sells different flags. I only noticed fall/winter on sale now. I inquired on their Spring/Summer collection and when will they be ready!!! It's been a worth while hobby for the "snow and cold" days! Stuck in New England and making the best of the "good" going out days though!

Writing my "Beauty Culture" columns bi-weekly for the Post Gazette (the Italian voice of Massachusetts) has been a fun and rewarding experience. Oh what I wouldn't give for those Jayne Mansfield thighs! Or even the coy smile of Claudia Cardinale! True bona fide bombs if ever who could steal a man's heart.

The giggly Marilyn Monroe flopping down on a soft mattress of down. Jean Harlow's platinum hair carried that drop-dead sex appeal in the 1933 film "Bombshell" Frolicking fountain girl Anita Ekberg. The swinging hips of the redheaded firecracker Ann-Margret could sway an Army. Anna Nicole Smith brought us back to the days of the "siren" diva. The ultimate sensual, steamy but always classy Sophia Loren has melted many hearts! All in all, the "look" is back!!

From the runways in Milan, Mad Men's Joan to Kim Kardashian's "get ready for a bumpy night" curves!! Real glamour is timeless. The pin-up potential look for Old Hollywood glam is easier to achieve today than years ago. You can find all sorts of make-up tricks from the beauty mags or even the make-up counter gals themselves.

First of all, well arched and not thin eyebrows are a must. Dark liner on top and bottom of lash lids will bring out your eyes. A smoky color in the crease and a frosty light highlight just below brows will add that smoldering look. Then with all the product out there for volumizing eyelashes-go to it! Experiment and take time. There is an inner siren in all of us!! Pile on the lash!!!

And now the hair-big, poufy loose tresses (don't laugh--those "Bump-its" really work!) Va-va voom bouffants will complement a capacious cup size if you've got them!

Also the correct foundation garment will enhance any gal's figure. Think of Rita Hayworth in Gilda with her famous hair flip. Raquel Welch who has aged beautifully into our decade old millennium.Ursula Andress's sultry look in Dr. No. Sharon Tate's voluptuous curves in Valley of the Dolls.

Give Thanks to Beauty that Lies in the Heart of a Dad

Ciao bella,

No quick makeup tricks this week—no magic beauty potions to defy Mother Nature. No, not this week, just a different kind of beauty that comes only once in a lifetime—the loving bond between a daughter and Father.

I wasn’t always in the right place with my Mom. She thought my move to Boston (that hard-boiled town!) didn’t suit my future. She loved me so much; she wanted only the best for her first-born girl. We were alike in so many ways personality wise. She took me under her wing and taught me good business ethics, how to respect and treat clients as well as people. I always followed her lead.

And then there was Dad! When we lost Mom over nine years ago, Dad became our buddy. My dreams of painting the town red (Boston of course) with my parents all came true at least with Dad. He partied with my husband David and I everywhere. He was sweet, delightful and a great listener. He would solve all our dilemmas with just a few wise words. He admired a new dress and even an old dress. He always complemented my hair color—reminding him of my Nanas’ auburn color.

Some Saturdays while I had to work at my shop David and he would take the subway and shuttle to Suffolk Downs Racetrack. Together they were magnets for people’s attention—always photos with lots of new friends and always a few pretty girls. Oh yes wherever there was Dad there was a pretty lady chatting her up!

We enjoyed all the frosting on the cake Boston had to offer. The wonderful restaurants of the North End, theatre—he adored those Rockettes!, concerts, and socials galore—Fourth of July parties on our roof deck where we enjoyed a view of the fireworks from not only the roof but our apartment window if we felt like taking it down a notch! And oh the matching clothes between Dad and David!

Our three trips to Miami—two were for my Christmas birthday were amazing. My friend there, Debbie O., made both Christmases so special for Dad and us. “He was a special fellow,” as Deb just wrote in her sympathy card to me.

For Dad’s 90th birthday we called on the dancing girls! The family bash was the NEXT day!

It was a great ride and so now the train for Dad has stopped to move on to his next destination. If there is a heaven he is there. And I know his love and light will always live on in me. How very fortunate and special I feel to have experienced such paternal devotion. The best is yet to come, as Dad always said!

So my fans and readers this is the time to give thanks to your special Dad and thanks for all of God’s Blessings.

As Hallowe’en approaches we are surrounded by all things creepy and spooky. During this haunting holiday season, superstitions, folklore, and myths descend upon us unremittingly. We have all heard about the superstitions concerning broken mirrors and Friday the 13th. But did you know that as early as A.D. 77 people began documenting beliefs suggesting that fingernails and toe nails played a vital role in the outcome of their lives? Read on for more eerily notions that have circulated throughout the world for centuries.

It has been known that nails reflect a person’s health, but some even believe that they can also see into the future and detect a person's true character.

According to some believers—

It is best to cut nails during the waning of the moon.

Ttrim nails at sea if a storm is desired.

If babies’ nails are trimmed before they are one year old, they’ll grow up to be thieves.

Never cut nails on a Friday or Saturday for fear it will bring bad luck.

Parents are encouraged to let their children’s nail clippings fall into an open Bible as they are cut so they will grow up to be honest.

White specks on a person’s nails are thought to be “gifts” that portend something good will happen in that person’s lifetime.

Personality traits are detected through the shape of a person's nails.

Ridges and breakage are symbols of important things that have happened or will happen in someone’s life.

If a boy’s nails are dirty with soot and oil and turn toward the sun, the reflections from the sun’s rays may produce images that can be interpreted to foretell future events.

As luck has it, these folklore tales have since passed their validity! But look out for black cats crossing your path and stay away from walking under a ladder (those are two I believe in!)

We all need “tips” and reminders to stay feeling good and looking good. Enjoy these tried and true ones to a prettier and healthier you!

Use sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF or higher—no matter what your skin color is, everyday, winter and summer ,no matter where you live.
Take care of your chest and to renew it—gently exfoliate regularly with a face scrub.
Queen Latifah’s grandmother’s beauty secret for an exfoliant is mixing water and baking soda. Use gently.
For those low digit winter days wear a super rich moisturizer.
Keep a steady date of close friends regularly meeting—lowers blood pressure, delays memory loss, reduces risk of infection such as the common cold.
Drink your morning “joe”—3 cups a day for cancer prevention and to enhance memory.
Eat your romaine, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard—helps protect your eyes from UV damage.
Use lemon juice as a slough for hands and age spots.

I have made soy an everyday part of my diet. Just a cup of soymilk in the morning seems to keep those “hot” moments cooler! If you know what I mean!

Soy is a legume native to east Asia, grown as part of crop rotation due to their ability to add nitrogen in the soil. The United States is the most recent leader in the production of soybeans. They are high in protein and vitamins A, E and K. The oil is produced by solvent extraction.

A healthy and delicious soy snack is Edame—look for it in the frozen foods or your fav Japanese restaurant. So lo-cal and good for you.

A few years back I was noticing everyone’s eyelashes. Probably because mine didn’t look as long as they used to be. So first I tried the one-piece fake lashes, from Mac brand to Duane Reade (a New York City “CVS” except better for make-up).

Trying to glue those babies on was quite a task. Thanks goodness eyelash glue is very forgiving! Practice and experience seemed to be the key in mastering this procedure.

They were really beautiful. But I still felt like I had a quarter weighing on each eyelid!

Then there were the individual lashes. I needed a tweezer and small scissors to apply because you can cut them to your desired length without much error—not like the one-piece lashes. I patiently sat at my vanity and tried my creative hand at it. The “individuals” were easier to apply and looked lovely. Unfortunately the only time I wore the individuals it was wasted on a “girls night out” and not fluttering at somewhere someone is seen!

It was a worthwhile try. So being the catalogue shopping queen I found an “eyelash conditioner”. I applied it once in the morning and once at night. Stroking my babies with a mascara brush dipped into a clear gel on top and bottom lashes. After just a couple of weeks I saw a big difference. It was worth the effort.

Lately I discovered a vibrating wand mascara by Maybelline and I truly believe that from the stimulation on the lashes it has promoted lash growth.

TIP: always remove your mascara before bed to prevent lash breakage.

So if you see that your lashes and brows are looking sparse try the next NEW lash conditioner (most are sold over the counter but you might want to try a prescription one for a more serious problem). You’ll have fluttering peepers again before you know it!

I have been giving all my readers an insight to utilize all of nature's finest “nectars of the Gods.” This one is no different. Ginseng is a perennial herb with a fleshy root and is slow growing. Coming from Eastern Asia, primarily China and Korea, it is readily used. Wild American Ginseng has had a problem of over-harvesting, leading to crops that are not as valuable.

The active ingredient which makes Ginseng so popular is in the root. The ginsensosides help to reactivate and revitalize epidermal cells. The saponins, mucin and vitamin B also come from the root.

Ginseng products help in smoothing wrinkles and aid in replenishing moisture for dry skin. It is great for renewing skin elasticity, rejuvenating, oxygenating and stimulating skin. For centuries Ginseng has been known as a cure-all for illness. It has been known to balance and normalize body functions. I am no doubt a Rachael Ray fan. I watch her TV talk show on occasion. I subscribe to her magazine. By the way there are some wonderful recipes and tips on cooking.

Whenever I have an old RR mag to recycle someone spies it and wants it. Recently I found some other kind of food recipes in one of the summer issues and I want to share them with you. Good stuff to make you feel good, smell good and shine!

From "Salon Chocolat," Nevada—Chocolate Martini Mask. Since unprocessed cocoa powder is loaded with antioxidants, it improves blood flow, tightens skin and helps in retaining moisture. So why not slap some on that mug!

Stir together 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1/4 cup honey (or brown sugar), 3 tablespoons oatmeal powder (grind whole oats in blender) and 2 tablespoons soymilk.

Using a wooden spatula or first 2 fingers apply this mix to clean skin, leave on for 20 minutes, then wipe off with warm towel. (Patch test first for sensitive skin.)

Pina Colada hand and foot treatment. This tried and true concoction of island bliss is from a spa in Walnut Creek.

In a blender mix 1/4 cup coconut oil and 1/4 cup pineapple juice. After blending, add 2 tablespoons dry polenta to exfoliate skin. Massage into hands and feet, then slip on cotton socks and gloves. Rough dry skin is removed and soft toes and hands are meant to be held!

Sangria Shine hair treatment. Summer can really play havoc on those locks, depleting moisture, shine and bounce. Here’s another recipe to restore it all from Tela Beauty Organics.

Stir ingredients together, add your fav conditioner, cover with a shower cap for 15 minutes, then rinse well.

Redheads: Mix 1 3/4 cups orange juice, 1/4 cup carrot juice and 1 teaspoon honey.
Blondes: Mix 1 3/4 cups cooled white tea and 1/4 cup apple juice.
Brunettes: Mix 2 cups pomegranate juice and a splash of grape juice.

When you think of beauty in the movies, how many can agree that the character “Scarlett O’Hara” in Gone With The Wind carried such a trait? Atlanta, Georgia where the movie takes place has many a Southern Belle but Scarlett takes the cake! Her lily-white skin has been envied by many. Her seductiveness went into full swing when she wanted to catch her next husband. Whether she was in love or not she scored every time!

In fact Gone With The Wind has been a favorite movie in my family forever since its debut in 1939 when my Mom Josephine saw it in one of those old movie palaces on a BIG screen. In those days the movies ran repeatedly all day. By the evening show Mom and her friends fell in love with Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara!

Ahhhhh......I wonder what beauty secrets Scarlett could reveal! Her complexion and skin so dreamy, creamy! Movie note: “Mammy” would apply buttermilk to Scarlett’s skin to bleach the freckles. Her fancy parasols helped to avoid the sun.

Oh and all those clothes the women in her day would wear, pantilettes, corsets, stockings and long dresses to the ankle served as protection not only from the sun!

Another movie note: Never try to fool a gentleman without your gloves when you’ve been picking cotton! I believe the Yankees stole the hand cream too.

Just recently I had the pleasure of visiting Atlanta, Georgia. Upon our arrival at the airport I ran into Miss Teen Georgia, Caroline Wade-Wow, talk about a striking southern belle. Those beauty contestants are gifted.

My sight- seeing interests led me to visit The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum. She wrote the best selling novel Gone With The Wind there. Ann B. was our tour-guide and a marvelous one at that. Showing us around the house she could answer any question on Margaret’s life. It was not only a job for Ann, but a true fondness for Margaret’s life and how the success of the movie affected Margaret and Atlanta.

Margaret was a romantic realist and will be long remembered for writing Gone With The Wind, a most attractive women herself with beauty secrets of her own

Reiki was developed by Natural Healer and Buddhist Mikao Usai. He opened his first commercial Reiki clinic in 1922 in Japan. Many followers adapted this meditation technique so that the body can heal itself naturally. Reiki is considered to be complementary and an alternative medicine.

In 1922 while Usai was performing a 21-day Buddhist training course held on Mount Kurama in Japan he had this mystical revelation! The training course which probably consisted of meditation, fasting. chanting and prayer provided Usai the gained knowledge and spiritual power to apply and teach others what he called Reiki.

He lived to be 61 years young and on the inscription on his memorial stone read how he taught over 2,000 people in his lifetime and 16 of his students continued their training to reach a level of being a Natural Healer!

Here in East Boston is where you’ll find plenty of ageless beauty secrets! The Queens of Entertainment Mary Ann Cerundoloand Terry DeSimone hosted their Annual Mother’s Day Lunch at Spinelli’s in East Boston. Once again I was lucky to be invited.

The room was bustling with the kind of energy you would experience at a teen dance! Our “Dee Jay Connection” Alan La Bella whose motto is “For The Time of Your Life” was gearing up the Italian songs, and from disco to Dean Martin. The ladies and gents were arriving in style. It was a fashion show!

I had the pleasure of being seated with Angela Menino and her companion Eliza who is head of the Mayor's Elderly Commission. They are great supporters of seniors and their needs.

Father Wayne spoke in Italian and translated in English a most touching and memorable Mother’s Day Blessing. Then a delicious lunch was served and the festivities were underway. All danced between courses. There is another “beauty secret” for you "dancing between courses!

Oh and plenty of smiling as Alan had each table sing-along. He played “Tiny Bubbles”, a tune my Nana DiZazzo whistled to all the day. It was great memory of my youth.

Fun was had by all. These ladies have embraced their golden years and make them effortless. The vibrancy of this group, some aged well over 90 years young is amazing. On with the celebration.

Rose Forti and Hilda Santos were honored for their 20 plus years as members. No more dues for them. God bless.

Marie C. is still looking for good skincare. Rose P.’s daughters are always asking her “Ma, but where are you?—you’re never home!”

Well that's the way it should be. The gypsy soul will always remain young and never bored. My friend Marilyn M. with an ache here and there still maintains a busy lifestyle. Her complexion is always soft, smooth and make-up perfect. We'll be partying it up at Italia Unite soon!

The United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service (CS) is organizing a Beauty and Cosmetics Trade Mission to India (New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore), November 15-19, 2010. Led by a senior Department of Commerce official, the mission will assist U.S. beauty and cosmetics companies to identify prospective representatives, distributors, partners, and end-users in the vibrant Indian market. The cosmetics/beauty industry is one of the booming retail sectors in India with very strong potential for new-to-market (NTM) U.S. companies. U.S products are perceived to be very high quality in India and are in high demand. Mission participants will have a first-hand opportunity to assess market potential in India and to meet key decision makers. Trade mission participants will have customized meeting schedules to meet with potential partners, professional end-users, major retailers and key government and regulatory officials.

Commercial Setting

The emergence of a young urban elite population with increasing disposable income in cities, including an increase in the number of working women increase looking for lifestyle-oriented and luxury products is the main driver of demand for imported cosmetics products. Indian consumers tend to look towards international brands as lifestyle enhancement products.

The total size of the Indian retail beauty and cosmetics market is currently estimated at $950 million. The overall beauty and wellness market, which includes beauty services, is $2.68 billion. The cosmetics market in India is growing at 15-20% annually, twice as fast as that of the United States and European market. Premium global brands are gaining sales as Indian consumers gain exposure to the global media and move from functional items to advanced and specialized cosmetic products. With the beauty service industry growing rapidly in India, the spa segment in India is also attracting a lot of attention. The spa industry over the last five years has shown tremendous growth, not only in the number of spas, but also in the diversity of spas and products available. The spa and body treatment segment is estimated to be approximately $772 million over the next five to eight years.

Now is the time for U.S. beauty and cosmetics firms to enter the Indian market. European competitors have already been very aggressive. U.S. products viewed as high quality but awareness levels are low for smaller U.S. brands. Even with a good growth rate, penetration of cosmetic and toiletries is very low in India. With a 15-20% growth rate in this sector, this translates into tremendous potential for U.S. companies.

Recruitment efforts for the trade mission will focus on the dynamic growth opportunity areas such as color cosmetics, fragrances (fragrance is the most popular import purchase), specialized skin care and hair care products, professional salon products, nail care products, and spa equipment and products.

Additionally, the trade mission will allow the participating U.S. companies to learn about potential regulatory changes that would require all foreign cosmetics companies to register their products before being allowed to sell (Note: Indian companies are already required to register; so far foreign companies have been exempted from this requirement). If this proposed change to the Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 passes, foreign companies importing products would receive certificates with three years' validity, whereas companies manufacturing in India would have certificates valid for five years. Moreover, the trade mission participants will learn about India's labeling requirements. While not especially onerous, the labeling requirements must be adhered to in order for U.S. companies to sell in India.

Mission Goals

The goals of the Beauty and Cosmetics Trade Mission to India are to: (1) Introduce U.S. mission participants to the vibrant Indian market, especially in the three large metropolitan cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore, to assess business opportunities; (2) establish valuable contacts with prospective agents, distributors and retailers; and (3) meet with Government regulators to understand the policy and regulatory framework and to explain American industry experience and best practices.

Mission Scenario

Participants will visit three of the India's key metropolitan centers. The mission will have access to major countrywide markets, as well as Indian government officials and U.S. Embassy staff for regulatory and business climate briefings.

New Delhi--the capital city of India where participants can meet with government officials to learn about policies and regulations, particularly current labeling requirements and potential registration issues, which would impact all U.S. beauty/cosmetics companies.

Mumbai--the business and financial capital of India were there will be meetings with appropriate customs and government officials, industry associations, networking reception and site visits.

Bangalore--a booming city with an organized retail market and the first destination of many global consumer brands, especially luxury labels.

During the trade mission participants will receive: (A) Briefings on beauty and cosmetic markets in India; (B) one-on-one meetings tailored to each firm's interests; (C) introductions to potential agents/distributors, facility administrators, and purchasing managers through group events; (D) site visits if applicable; and (E) meetings with local business representatives and government officials, as appropriate.

While Chamomile comes from the Greek word “earth apple” because of its scent Azulene comes from the Spanish dialect “azul” because of its color, dark blue. Dark blue is known to be such a tranquil and relaxing color. No wonder it is found in chamomile which has been used for centuries in Europe as a widely used herbal medicine for a variety of ailments. Chamomile tea is said to cause a soft and sleepy mood for a good night’s sleep; and beauty is to sleep well!

The azulene is extracted from the chamomile flower by steam distillation. The dark blue oil extract is used as an inflammatory found in topical applications to sooth sensitive or sun damaged skin. It can be spotted in face and body creams as well as sunburn and burn remedies. Azulene can also be found in shaving and waxing products, eye treatments and also a variety of treatments for dry skin.

Find the cosmetology schools in your area. Book an appointment with a student that is near finishing his or her hours. I remember when I was going to school and I was given a client, I wanted to do a great job, especially in front of my peers. We were all competing in a way. The schools charge a low cost for an appointment—always supervised by a teacher.

The make-up counter anywhere—Saks, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor—just go in and ask for some make-up tips—pick up samples. All the girls are happy to apply your face. Just ask.

Instead of full massages, inquire about “spot” massages where one part of the body is focused on.

Try getting a full manicure one week and then a polish change the next.

Pedicures are so luxurious—so try a mini-pedi sometimes.

And of course, always take advantage of promotions and customer loyalty offers.

Health is beauty; beauty is health! That is the theme of my “You Look Marvelous” Beauty Talk series at the North End Branch Public Library for spring.

Back in December my friend Robert who is a master stylist at the Catherine-Michaels Salon in Burlington Mall, knows good taste. He gave me a gift of Argan oil. Oh he mentioned it a few times to me if I’d heard of it and its many benefits. It was vague to me and all. So as a gift he presented me with this sunshine from the gods!

The oil is derived from the nut of the argan tree found in southwestern Morocco. You would think with my two trips there in the late `80s I would have known all about it! New discoveries are out there at our finger tips so we must always read and listen for it!

The argan tree is well adapted to very dry weather. Unfortunately human invasion is putting the tree on the endangered list.

The oil is extracted from the kernels of the nut found inside a green, olive-like fruit. Manual extraction and crushing has been done by Berber women for hundreds of years. Lately modern presses are extracting the oil. Fair trade cooperatives in Morocco benefiting women have popularized the oil, skyrocketing its use for users and also beneficial for local harvesters. The oil is slightly deeper in color than olive oil, has a nutty flavor, is rich in vitamin E, absorbent and highly moisturizing.

The unroasted oil is used for cosmetic purposes such as rejuvenating the skin and neutralizing free radicals. It is also used to revitalize hair and strengthen nails. The oil is also known to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. You can find argan oil in beauty products for skin, hair, nails and in lipsticks, face masks and self tanning sprays. And of course just bottled by itself.

Controlling Chemical Hazards During the Application of Artificial Fingernails

Artificial fingernail products are made from many chemicals, but the main one in most of these products is ethyl methacrylate (EMA). In 1974 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration outlawed a similar chemical, methyl methacrylate (MMA), used in fingernail products. MMA was proven harmful to nail technicians and customers. However, both MMA and EMA can cause contact dermatitis, asthma, and allergies in the eyes and noseCall problems that nail technicians know about. Both can make the eyes, nose, and other mucous membranes sting, become red, and swell. Customers are at risk, too. Because it is often difficult to tell which chemical in a nail salon is causing a sensitivity or allergy, it is best to control your exposure before you become sensitized.

Rummaging in the bowels of my dad's cellar discovers a huge chunk of remembrances from my childhood and before. Up on one shelf was yet another box filled with just plain junk on top of what I considered a treasure -- my mom's appointment book from nana's shop in the year 1950.

Calendars from just 20 and 30 years ago lay on top. But 1950: why did she save that book in particular? More on question later.

Each column for January through December detailed each client --customers at the time-- a name, always with a proper Miss or Mrs. in front.

The services ranged from perms to polish on the nails. There were no answering machines then, so Mom relied on being there to answer the phone, take appointments, and service the walk-ins.

Some days were slow, with just one customer. And then some were just packed in and she barely stopped all day, working as late as ten o'clock --and off to the bus for home.

The services included a "treatment," shampoo and wave, a tint, and so forth. The cost for a shampoo and wave in 1950 was seventy-five cents! Other services were priced similarly.

Among the names she would mention over her next 51 years on earth, many were there in that book. I saw there listed the mother and aunts of one of my own especially loved clients Mrs. Pat P_____a. I've been servicing her nails for at least 20 years now! She tells me how she accompanied her mother to my mom's shop and would press her face into the window to see just how much longer mom would be.

Ah, if the book could only talk, what tales it could tell.

So, enough about business. Let's get down to romance in the beauty shop. Lo and behold, there were scribblings of my dad's (her future husband) name: his visitor's day there. And a year's appointments for her future sister-in-law, Aunt Ann DiZazzo (my mom finally spelled it correctly three-quarters through the year.) And, of course, her future mother-in-law, my nana Mrs. Mary DiZazzo!

[Mary’s husband is giving her an early Valentine’s Day present: a week off from writing All That Zazz.]

Mindful that Monday we celebrate the birthday of George Washington I must tell the truth—the title of his confection is not original, rather I take it from a website http://artofmanliness.com/, authored by a husband and wife team, since 2008 it has featured articles on helping men be better husbands, better fathers, and better men.

While that website ranges over topics such as health and sports, money and career, and relationships and family, there is a section devoted to topics that correspond to beauty culture for women—men’s dress and grooming. In that regard, I’ll offer some rules for men.

1. Your suit: it’s dark, it covers you up (including the budges we get with age), and they all look more-or-less alike. You put it on and go to work every day. It’s not a style statement; it’s a uniform. It frees you from thinking about what to wear or how it makes you look. It’s clean, it’s pressed; it says, Here’s a man who’s going to get something done today.

2. Your hat—wear one! A bareheaded man looks as unfinished as those hideous modernist building of the mid-20th century that lacked a cornice. From May 15 to September 15 it is acceptable to wear a straw hat rather than the more formal, but warmer, felt hat. The dates are inviolable. According to St. Paul a woman should crown her beauty with a hat. She therefore takes care in picking out the correct hat for the season and occasion to perfect her charms. For a man to have to think: is this a “Straw Hat Day” or “Felt Hat Day?” is unbecoming and unmanly—that’s why we have a calendar to dictate such things.

3. Somewhere along the way some misguided fools came up with something called “creative black tie.” Don’t do it! For eveningwear a man has but two options: “White tie and tails” which unless you are a member of the diplomatic corps is almost never seen, and “Black tie” which means black dinner suit with black bowtie. It is the most “uncreative” dress possible, and that is precisely the point. At formal or semi-formal evening events the men all wear the identical uniform so that all the attention will be on the ladies present and their gowns.

Remember men: It’s all about the ladies. Remember your lady on February 14th!

Ciao bella,

Thanks to my Italian heritage I was born with very curly, frizzy, kinky hair. So many people say, “Oh I wish I had your hair!” Well be careful what you wish for. I’ve only come to like my curly hair after it’s been set and dried in rollers or blown dry with the use of specific products required! The results are lovely, soft, shiny waves—but of course only when there is not a drop of humidity, no drizzle and no rain. Products be darned that claim “anti-humectants” descriptions –don’t work!

I have a wonderful collection of fashionable hats that have somewhat saved the ‘do’ from what everyone calls “a bad hair day.” I have tried numerous times to go au naturale but to no avail, the tight curls just don’t suit me. No glamour there. Not for me!

Now take my cousins Josie, her sis Connie and Connie’s daughter Sharon—their curly hair is beautiful on them. I can’t picture them any other way. That’s what happens when you are born in a Beauty Salon! My Nana’s was on the second floor of her tenement Fashion Beauty Salon.

This past June we had so much drizzle, rain and humidity I was fed up! I did my homework thanks to LOLA magazine and found a marvelous salon on Newbury St. to help my woes of “hair depression.” They offered this NEW smoothing, straightening therapy—it carried a hefty price tag. But the professionalism and attention to detail of ACOTE SALON was unsurpassable! As an early morning appointment I was greeted by French music and the lovely Allison -and as every employee arrived for their day of work I was treated and greeted in a friendly and warm fashion.

ALEX my stylist was certainly “born into his niche.” His Dad Gaston and Uncle Serge (both owners of several and successful salons on Newbury St. for years) studied cosmetology in the South of France in Marseilles. Many hair inventions, techniques and products have come from France way before any place else. ALEX trained at Vidal Sassoon, the Training Academy in Miami. Alex has brought hairdressing to an artistic form-a true master of hair.

He is quite handsome and a charming personality to keep his clients feeling comfortable with an undeniable trust. Alex says “You must like and care for your clients because they'll be nothing but floors, ceiling and furniture to look at—I don’t think hairdressing is just a career, it’s a calling, not just a job—almost something you’re born with inside of you.”

My treatment originally called the “Brazilian Straightening System” was reformulated as “The Coppola Keratin Straightening System” (formaldehyde removed)

The process took 3 care-free hours. Alex worked to loosen the curl and remove the frizz. Voila!!! I'm sure you all remember your first Barbie doll. She was either blonde or brunette (I chose the blonde with the top knot pony tail in place) and she wore a black and white zebra swim suit. And oh the accessories. We played for hours in the neighborhood with childhood friends Joyce E.,Tina Z., and Inta K! What fun—Memories I still cherish. It was a simple time. We stayed children a long time then.

January 29, 2009, WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of about 516,000 Spa Factory™ Aromatherapy Fountain & Bath Benefits Kits. Pressure from the buildup of carbon dioxide in the jars of Bath Bombs/Balls or Bath Fizzies can cause the caps on the jars to blow off, posing explosion and projectile hazards. The mixtures also can contain citric acid, which can get into the eyes during an explosion, posing a risk of eye irritation. The kits were manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China.

Lip Gloss Keychains Recalled By Markwins Beauty Products Due to Risk of Lead Exposure

January 27, 2009, WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced a voluntary recall of about 75,000 Lip Gloss Keychains. The metal clasp attached to the keychain contains high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. The products were sold at Rite Aid, Kmart, Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart Stores nationwide during October 2008 for about $1. They were manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China.

High School Musical Manicure Kits Recalled by Fantas-Eyes Due to Risk of Lead Exposure

The lettering “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” with glitter on the pouch used with the manicure kit contains excess levels of lead. Lead can be toxic if ingested by young children and cause adverse health effects. The kits were sold by LTD Commodities and ABC distributing catalogs and Web Sites and on www.lakeside.com from September 2008 to November 2008 for about $11. The kits were manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China.

Men’s Grooming Salons Hit Boston

Men’s grooming has hit Boston like a wave. In the past year, several men’s grooming centers have opened their doors, as long-established spas and salons have begun setting aside certain nights and treatments for men only.

Traditional barbershops have begun expanding their services, and shaving cream companies have begun producer fancier, more expensive lotions.

“Guys are really into this,” said Kelly Tarlow, manager of High Street Men’s Grooming Center on Newbury Street in Boston.
